It refers to the supply of electricity  to an electric vehicle (EV), commonly called “charging stations” or “charging docks”. In simple terms, an EVSE is a wall mounted box that supplies electric energy for the recharging of electric vehicle batteries.

AC CHARGING AND DC CHARGING

What is Ac Charging?
AC(Alternating current) charging is the most common charging method for electric vehicles with a plug. When plugging an electric vehicle into a normal charge point, the power gets converted inside the vehicle, then moves into the car battery. Charging speeds depend on the output power of the chargepoint as well as the convertor’s capabilities to convert the power to DC.

What is Dc Charging?
DC(Direct Current) charging can transform alternating current (AC) to direct current (DC) itself, then it bypasses the onboard charger of an electric car and sends this current directly to the battery.

HOW CAN A EV OWNER CHARGE HIS/HER VEHICLE

So basically, there are two places where you can charge your EV and that is, first, obviously your home and the second one is at some public place like- parking plots, shopping malls, workplace, residential area, hotels etc. An electric car or bike can be easily plugged into your home and charged with the use of an EV charger. It is found that over 80% of the electric car users charge their EVs overnight at home or at work. So, first of all we will go with the basic charging place that is our home, and then we will move further to the public places.

Home Charging

Home chargers are generally used with a 230V/15A single phase plug (the same plug we use for high load household appliances such as air-conditioners) that delivers up to 2.5kW of output power. Clearly, home charging is a type of AC (Alternating Current) charging. The amount of electricity consumed is added to home-metering. You can charge your Ev with the basic plug used to charge your household appliances. Amount of time taken to charge an EV depends on the rate of charging and the amount of charge required (depends on the battery’s usable capacity). Home charging can charge electric scooters in 2-3 hours, and electric cars in 6-7 hours.

CHARGING AN EV AT PUBLIC AREAS

You can charge your car when parked in public locations, like at the supermarket, gym, cinema, retail parks, town-centre car parks - you name it.
It’s not usually necessary to fully charge your battery at your destination, but frequent top-ups mean that you don’t run low or have to wait while your battery recharges from empty. You’ll need to bring your own charging cable and often need to download a smartphone app to start your charge (although in some cases it’s as simple as just plugging in). PUBLIC EV CHARGING STANDARDS

Public electric charging refers to the charging of your Ev’s outside your home charging. In public charging, roadside charging points are made available for you to charge your electric vehicle. It also includes charging stations in public places or commercial facilities open to the public, for example service stations and tourist attractions and charging stations in open car parks, for example commercial buildings and parking plots.

The public ev charging standards in India includes;

PUBLIC AC CHARGING STANDARD-AC001

We already discussed AC(Alternating Current) charging and EVSE(Electric Vehicle Supply Equipment) earlier, now the term comes to the Public AC charging standard-AC001. AC001 can deliver maximum 15A charging current at 3.3 kW power to three vehicles all together. However, as mentioned earlier, AC EVSEs supply current to the vehicle’s onboard chargers. India, as onboard chargers for 2-wheelers, 3-wheelers and 4-wheelers have max power ratings up to 2.5 kW to 3 kW.

AC 001 is essentially low power charging, so there is no communication protocol defined for EV-EVSE communication. Two-way communication between EVSE(Electric Vehicle Supply Equipment) and the CMS follows an international standard – Open Charge Point Protocol (OCPP) over the internet.

PUBLIC DC CHARGING STANDARD-DC001

We also already discussed DC(Direct Current) charging earlier. So, now we will discuss the term Public DC charging standard-DC001. It can deliver maximum 200A charging current at 15 kW power, directly to the vehicle’s battery. DC-001 specifies OCPP(Open Charge Point Protocol) protocol for EVSE-CMS communication and uses custom GB/T for EV-EVSE communication over CAN(Controller Area Network) mode. Existing vehicles in India use CAN protocol for internal communication, hence the same was selected for communication between EVSE and EV’s Battery Management System.
