How Long Does It Take to Charge an Electric Car?

Electric car charging can take anywhere from 30 minutes to overnight. The actual time depends on your battery size, the charger you’re using, and how much charge is left when you plug in. Most EV owners simply plug in at night and wake up to a fully charged car. On road trips, a DC fast charger can bring the battery to 80% in less than an hour.

How to Calculate EV Charging Time

A simple example: if your EV has a 40-kWh battery and you charge it with a 7.4 kW home charger, it will usually take around 5 to 6 hours

The final 20% often takes longer because the car slows the charging speed to protect the battery. That is why most fast charging times are measured from 10% to 80%.

How Long Does It Take to Charge an Electric Car at Home?

  • 3.3 kW portable EV charger: about 10 to 15 hours
  • 7.4 kW home charger: about 4 to 8 hours
  • 11 kW to 22 kW AC chargers: about 3 to 6 hours, if your car supports it

If you usually drive within the city, overnight charging is more than enough.

The Statiq 3.3 kW Portable EV Charger is useful when you want the flexibility to charge from a standard 16A socket. For faster charging at home, Statiq Nectar is available in 7.4 kW, 11 kW, and 22 kW options.

How Long Does DC Fast Charging Take?

When time matters, DC fast charging makes a noticeable difference.

  • 60 kW charger: around 45 to 90 minutes to reach 80%
  • 120 kW charger: around 30 to 60 minutes
  • 240 kW to 360 kW chargers: as little as 15 to 30 minutes for compatible EVs

Statiq’s DC fast charging range includes compact 60 kW Mini DC chargers and configurable chargers up to 360 kW for high-traffic commercial sites.

What Affects EV Charging Time?

Charging speed is influenced by:

  • Battery size
  • Charger power
  • Your vehicle’s charging limit
  • Current battery percentage
  • Battery temperature

So, How Long Does It Really Take?

For daily use, most electric cars charge in 4 to 8 hours at home. On the road, DC fast charging can add substantial range in 20 to 60 minutes.

In practice, charging an EV often fits naturally into your routine. Plug in at night, wake up to a full battery.
